Art Düsseldorf announces its curatorial themes for 2027 and opens the application portal

Galleries can now apply to take part in Art Düsseldorf 2027. The fair will take place from April 9 to 11, 2027 at Areal Böhler in Düsseldorf, with a preview and opening on April 8. The application period runs until October 28, 2026. In 2027, three curatorial themes will once again run through Art Düsseldorf, addressing current discourses in contemporary art. They explore issues that are currently prominent in the contemporary art scene. Galleries may choose to align their booths with one of these themes. The Power of Words — brings together artistic works that engage with language, writing, text, voice or AI-generated language. The focus is on various forms of text art and the spoken word, as well as decolonial perspectives. Material Revisited — turns its attention to craftsmanship and materiality. Artists work with natural, recycled and innovative materials, combining traditional techniques with ecological and social issues. This also brings into focus the relationship between materiality and increasingly digital and algorithmic visual worlds. Roots and Identities — explores questions of identity, origin and belonging across generations. The spectrum ranges from the personal and cultural roots of older generations to the influences of a globally interconnected and digital world on younger artistic practices. "These three themes reflect issues that we are currently observing in many artistic practices and in our dialogue with galleries. They concern language and AI, materials and craftsmanship, but also origin, identity and belonging. We see these themes as an invitation to galleries to set their own priorities and to conceive of their booth as an artistic statement." — Gilles Neiens, Artistic Director of Art Düsseldorf Galleries can apply for the Main, Solo, Paper and Next sections (for young galleries under 10 years old). A new addition is the Next+ section for galleries between 10 and 13 years old, aimed at galleries in transition from Next to an established position, filling a previously missing intermediate stage. The prerequisite for all applicants is at least one year of uninterrupted gallery activity with regular opening hours and a continuous exhibition programme. A specialist jury comprising representatives from galleries and institutions decides on admission. The 2027 jury comprises Leonie Chelsea Lang (Leap Art Foundation), Thomas Krinzinger (Krinzinger), Jonas Kriszeleit (Esther Schipper), Linn Lühn (Linn Lühn), Max Mayer (Galerie Max Mayer), Alexander Sies (Sies + Höke) and Julius Woeste (Petrine). This year, for the first time, applications will be submitted via a newly developed, dedicated application portal. An integrated 3D booth planner enables galleries to plan their booth during the application process and visualise it in 3D. Wall layouts and colours can be specified, and images of the planned artworks can be inserted directly into the 3D view via drag-and-drop — even sculptures can be integrated into the booth design. Since its founding in 2017, it has established itself as an important meeting point for galleries, collectors, curators and an art-interested public in the Rhineland.
